Found at a Vermont Country House Sale... A Presidential Treasure
This exquisite reproduction teapot tells the story of America's preservation movement and our enduring fascination with the founding era. Hand-made in Europe by prestigious Hutschenreuther, it was sold exclusively at Mount Vernon's gift shop by special order—no longer available and increasingly rare.
Historical Significance
Copies of Martha Washington's celebrated "States" china have captivated collectors since the 1876 Centennial, but this piece likely dates to the 1950s fundraising campaign that saved Mount Vernon from demolition. A tangible link to both our founding mother and mid-century preservation efforts.
Masterful Details
Every element carries symbolic weight: the ouroboros (eternal snake) graces the lid, while the front displays the iconic starburst within a laurel wreath enclosing Martha's initials "MW." The Latin banner "Decus et tutamen ab illo" ("our union is our strength against him") boldly references King George—a defiant motto for a teapot that once graced the President's table.
European Craftsmanship
Rich gold embellishment adorns rims, handles, and spout. All details are hand-painted with the precision Hutschenreuther was renowned for—including a charming painter's mark where the artist's brush touched the rim while painting the snake, adding authentic character to this artisanal piece.
Condition: Exceptional, free of damage or wear. The small dark spot from the painter's brush only enhances its handmade charm.
