Luminescent glossy black glaze drips down both necks onto a matte brown and white swirl at base. The inside of each mouth is glossy blood red. Both pieces have a volcanic -like or black widow metaphorical similitude. Rare pieces of art that are also representative of of a special historic time in
italian ceramic making. Deruta then distributed to Raymor for sale in the United States.
The artist, Saraí Sherman (1922-2013) grew up in Philadelphia. In 1952 she won a Fulbright scholarship to study and paint in Italy. It would be the beginning of her lifelong relationship with the country. Later in her career she was invited by Alviero Moretti, (first son in family of artisans in Deruta who started his own company, L’Anitica Deruta) to create and “author” ceramics, vases and plates for La Fondazione Ceramica Contemporanea d’Autore. A foundation that combined classic Deruta tradition with contemporary art. She is collected by three major institutions: Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Whitney Museum of American Art, and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
