These French candleholders date to around 1820, known as the Epoque Restauration (1815-1830), the time when the Bourbon family returned … Read more These French candleholders date to around 1820, known as the Epoque Restauration (1815-1830), the time when the Bourbon family returned to rule France, a fact that fascinates me when you consider that the French got rid of them during the reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. The Restoration began in 1815 when Louis XVIII, the brother of Louis XVI, became the king of France, a period during which many wonderful pieces like these gilt bronze candleholders were crafted. These are unique in that the bronze was carved once the pieces were cast to achieve the amazing sharpness of the details. This is quality that you don't see very often. Part of the base is done in a lovely brown patina, a striking contrast to the gilding above. Each candleholder can be taken apart, being composed of eight separate pieces. This is ideal if they ever look crooked as you can simply take them apart and put them back together to correct the angle. I find the tripod bases with the lion's paws delightful. I should point out that one base is slightly higher than the other one, which is barely noticeable, but for the sake of accuracy, I wanted to point it out. These candleholders are in very good antique condition as you can see in the pictures.

These candleholders measure 10" (23.5 cm) in height, and the base is 4" (10 cm) across.
