Minimalistic, solid wood Japanese rice mortar, circa 1900.
Beautifully weathered wood, a unique and sought-after interior piece, brimming with history.
Dimensions: height 51 cm, diameter 48.5 cm. Weight: 42 kg.
The mortar has been expertly treated and will certainly stand out as an authentic interior object. This mortar was traditionally used in the making of mochi, a Japanese rice dessert. Mochi is created by pounding glutinous rice into a sticky dough ball. Using the wooden pestle, the rice is finely pounded and kneaded into a cohesive mass. This process requires strength and patience, as the rice grains must be completely processed into a cohesive dough.
