Dorothea Tanning worked as a commercial artist for Macy’s, all the while falling under the spell of surrealism. In 1946 she married Ernst Max. The marriage lasted until his death in 1976. Tannings.
This piece, called Orphans, is a soft ground etching. It is open-bite printed in grey purplish red, light yellow, and dark greyish brown. George Visat of Paris was the printer. Tanning’s works can be found at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Tate Gallery in London.

Paper size - 10” width, 14 1/2”
This etching is in very good original condition with wear consistent with age and use.
