Printed in Canada in 1970 by Springbok Editions Inc. The lithograph print is a one of a kind proof print created for an in house presentation by Springbok Editions. In 1970 Springbok licensed the artwork image in cooperation with the artist John Willenbecher to create a special edition lithograph print art puzzle. It features an Op Art Abstract artwork titled " Spectral " created by Willenbecher in 1968. As this lithograph print was never published for commercial use it is a truly special, one of a kind very rare piece.

The framed lithograph print was held in the private collection of the creative executive who oversaw the special edition lithograph print puzzle project, Edwin R. Mallery ( 1923 - 2005 ) since it was printed in 1970.

John Willenbecher ( B.1936 ) the American artist who's childhood interest in astronomy and constellations are inspirational elements in his Modernist Artworks. Willenbecher's passion for the night sky is manifested in his early work beginning in the 1960's. The unclassifiable visionary work spanning over six decades refers to labyrinths, Greek myths, and the night sky. Artworks by Willenbecher are held in the permanent collections of many prestigious museums including The Smithsonian Institution, The Guggenheim Museum New York, The Stedelijk Museum Holland, and The Albright Knox Museum Albany New York.

Willenbecher's 1968 work " Spectral " is a brilliant cascade of technicolor, so mathematical in nature it could be compared to a fractal. The incredible care taken into this colorful spiral is marked not only by the subtle fluctuations in the shade and hue, but also by precise gradations as the eye approaches the center vortex. Created at a time when such films as Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey were exploring the limits of futuristic creation, " Spectral " fits into the artistic landscape of science fiction as something galaxy - inspired, rainbow hues, as the title " Spectral " suggests - something unearthly, and otherworldly.

The rare vintage Mid Century Modern collector's framed Op Art lithograph print is period custom framed in 1970 with glass in an exquisite Mid Century Modern style archival presentation in a gold tone brass metal clad wrapped wood frame molding. Presented in a beautiful top float mounting on a natural ivory cream linen wrapped back matting, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.

It measures 24 3/4" W X 25 1/8" H X 1" D. It is in excellent " like new " vintage condition consistent with age and light signs of handling to the frame molding. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. See less
