Jim Dine ( b. 1935 ) is an American Jewish artist and poet whose oeuvre extends over sixty years. He is best known for his contributions in the formation of both Performance Art and Pop Art. Dine's work includes painting, drawing, printmaking in many forms, sculpture and photography.
At the core of his art, regardless of the medium of the specific work, lies an intense process of autobiographical reflection, an exploration and criticism of the self through highly personal motifs including the heart, the bathrobe, tools, antique sculpture and the character of Pinocchio. The stream of consciousness work, and the evolution of it are based on all aspects of his life. Art works by Dine are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Jim Dine's trademark hearts are an imagery motif that he returns to again and again. He has said " That it is a simple template that he uses for emotions. It is a landscape for everything. It is like Classical Indian music, based on something very simple but building to a complicate structure. Within that you can do anything in the world. And that's how i feel about my hearts. "
