This is a rug of exceptional rarity and a sublime virtuoso interpretation of the fabled “Garden of Paradise” motif, so beloved by the artists and weavers throughout the sphere of rug-making influence. The variety of colors is surprisingly wide, with luminous carnelian, blazing buttercup, soft sea foam, and jungle greens orchestrated by a deep Aegean blue. Its exceedingly fine weave and medium pile condition add immeasurably to this treasure’s singularity.
This Bahktiari rug is in excellent condition and would be a gorgeous wedding or anniversary gift today as it would have been early last century. Made with Persian wool, hand knotted and dyed using vegetable dyes. The colors are traditional for the time including blood red, rose, royal and midnight blues with accents of golden tan, browns, and beige. Not uncommon for smaller Persian and Armenian antiques, the warp and weft is also wool while cotton was used to stabilize the selvage and fringe. This rug measures 3'41" Long x 2'08" wide.
Provenance: This one-of-a-kind, heirloom Persian rug has been acquired by my great-grand-father William Alford Watson who was an accomplished archaeologist and Master SGT that served with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland in Greece, Egypt, and the Middle East. This was an infantry battalion from the Royal Regiment of Scotland that served in WWI.
Condition: Very good for age. Signs of traditional usage and age. Item has not been cleaned or repaired. Item is sold in the same condition as inherited.
