Albarello 18th century. Earthenware. RARE! maybe from the Catalan region.
"An albarello is a type of maiolica earthenware jar, originally a medicinal jar designed to hold apothecaries' ointments and dry drugs. The development of this type of pharmacy jar had its roots in the Middle East during the time of the Islamic conquests". Wikipedia.
Measurements: 11" tall x 4" wide
It is a tall and vibrant antique pair both with a body with a wide mouth, as is usual in this typology, made of polychrome ceramic, decorated on the outside with a vegetal composition in blue enamel paint, placed on a white border. This decoration reflects the technical skill and sensitivity of the craftsmen, the European and Eastern influences and the successive technical innovations that gave the work of Catalan potters a unique character. As for the technique used, despite its monochrome nature, the use of cobalt blue applied in different gradations produces a large number of shades which, in turn, contrast with the white tonality used as the base of the piece."
