The piece is crafted in wood and finished with dark lacquer, then decorated with carved and incised designs that look like copper inlay. In reality, the motifs are created using traditional lacquer techniques — fine incising and metal-infused pigments (often brass or copper powder) that give the artwork a warm, metallic shimmer similar to real inlay. The top has a beautiful bird-and-branch design, and the sides feature floral patterns framed in traditional borders. The front cartouche includes decorative Chinese characters that symbolize renewal, harmony, and abundant good fortune, which were commonly added to lacquer pieces of this era. The hibachi rests on its original stand, giving it a graceful, elevated silhouette. These originally held a removable copper liner for charcoal, which is no longer present — very typical for pieces of this age. The lacquer shows expected wear, chips, and surface loss from more than a century of use, giving it a relaxed wabi-sabi charm that works beautifully in both traditional and modern spaces.
