This oddly beautiful and uniquely one-of-a-kind, late 19th-century to early 20th-century, hand hammered copper vessel is the perfect accent to complement an Arts & Crafts, Mission or Gothic Revival-styled home. Handcrafted artisan piece that is either American or English; no makers mark to determine origin. There are two cast bronze monk head figures attached to the vessel with copper rivets. The monk’s head motif was a popular accent during this period. The vessel has a cramp seam (often called a dovetail seam) on one side (see photo 1) Cramp seams are the zig-zag brassy-yellow line running around the base and up the sides of an antique copper vessel or pot. These are the line marks where the coppersmith joined pieces of copper together to form the vessel, something like how a dressmaker sews pieces of cloth together to make a dress. The yellow stuff is a brass alloy. After the copper layers are cramped, molten brass is dripped on the cracks and smoothed over like caulk to help seal up and strengthen the seam, a process called brazing. Like a good tailor, a skilled coppersmith makes nice flat seams that are tight and strong, but these are seams that can survive for centuries. The era of cramp seams ended when welding became economical enough for the chaudronneries to invest in the new equipment. The principles of welding were discovered during the early 19th century but it remained an experimental technique until the turn of the 20th century. It measures 9¼” high x 7½” wide x 6” diameter; interior height of 8¼” taken from the bottom of the interior lip rim. Crafted from hammered copper with a zinc base with a wash or finish that was applied to the copper that has kept it from patination on the exterior. While on the interior, age-appropriate patination is evident. The vessel weighs 2 lbs. 4 oz. and is in excellent condition. For an Arts & Crafts aficionado, this beauty should be a must buy or the perfect gift for someone who is!
