The lithograph print photo poster is published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art New York, printed in 1978 in an unnumbered limited edition on the occasion of the exhibition " Avedon : Photographs 1947 - 1977 ". It features an iconic black and white 1955 photo image by Avedon titled " Dovima with Elephants ", copyright 1978 Richard Avedon.

Richard Avedon ( 1923 - 2004 ) was an American fashion and portrait photographer born in New York City to an immigrant Jewish family. His early interest in photography emerged at the age of 12. He worked for Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, and Elle specializing in capturing movement in still pictures of fashion, theater, and dance. In addition to his continuing fashion work, by the 1960's Avedon was making studio portraits of civil rights workers, politicians, cultural dissidents, protesters of The Vietnam War, and later the fall of The Berlin wall. He photographed many iconic Rock bands of the era including the famous 1968 images of The Beatles.

He was always interested in how portraiture captures the personality and soul of its subject. Among his iconic fashion advertisement series he photographed the Calvin Klein Jean campaign featuring a fifteen-year-old Brooke Shields, Gianni Versace campaigns, and Revlon's Most Unforgettable Women. His fashion and portrait photographs are commonly regarded as some of the most important that helped to define America's image of style, beauty and culture for more than a half-century.

The iconic " Dovima with Elephants " photograph originally appeared in a 14-page story on Paris fashions published in a 1955 issue of Harpers Bazar. Avedon photographed the model Dovima in a studio and various Paris locations, including The Cirque D'Hiver, where this image was shot. The dress was infact the first design for Dior by the 19-year-old Yves Saint Laurent. In the photograph Dovima appears poised and fearless, her sinuous contours echoing those of the massive pachyderms she seems to command.

The rare out of print framed iconic photo exhibition poster measures 21 1/2" W X 28" H X 1 3/8" D. It is custom framed with UV protective plexiglass in a Contemporary Modern recessed detail matte eggshell finish black metal frame molding, with an attached hanging wire on the reverse back side for easy wall installation.

It is in excellent " like new " condition. The poster print is in excellent " like new " clean vintage condition consistent with age, very light signs of handling, and very light minor wear.
