An early Wedgwood near pair of large beer mugs / porter tankards
Very fine creamware ceramic with the characteristic creamy white color
Late Georgian period shape and appeal
Decorated with underglaze en grisaille transfer, featuring interesting horn vessels displayed on tinseled velvet doilies
These are depictions of an historical artifact that is currently on display in Victoria & Albert Museum in Kensington
It is the Pusey Horn, a precious drinking horn, which takes its name from the manor of Pusey in Berkshire. William Pusey, a shepherd boy, had warned King Canute (1017- 1035) of an impending Danish attack and was given the manor in gratitude. The horn was delivered with the letter of tenure. "Cornage", or transfer of land by service of a horn, was customary in Anglo-Saxon England.
There are also brown lines around the rims and at the bases
Both mugs are slightly different, but match pretty well
Both are marked Wedgwood, but the incisions are faint and could be seen under certain angle, and are difficult to be caught with camera
Circa late 1700's early 1800's, England
