A Late Spode ironware serving dish from Copeland period
Shell shaped with polychrome underglaze decorations, transfer printed outlines, hand colored in bold enamels in cobalt blue and iron red, with gilded highlights overglaze. Brown band at the border
The pattern is known as Cabbage or Cabbage Leaf # 2061, sometimes referred to as "Tobacco Leaf"
The pattern is in the Chinese taste, produced with variations by many of the English potteries of the time, to compete directly with the large import of Canton or Chinese export porcelain from China.
Most likely considered as a sweet meat dish originally, this shallow bowl is perfect for serving candies, nuts or dessert treats
A rare, transfer printed blue underglaze mark, somehow blurred, Copeland Late Spode
Garret left the partnership in 1847, so this mark is possibly from around 1850.
