Biography
Antonio Salviati (1816-90) a north Italy lawyer set up a mosaic workshop in order to restore the mosaics of San Marco in Venice. He also became interested in blown glass and, with the financial support of Henry Layard and two of his associates, he set up Salviati & Company in 1866. But in 1870 the English backers insisted on changing the name to the Venice & Murano and Mosaic Company Ltd. In 1877 Salviati left the company to set up his own rival company and was replaced as artistic adviser by Alessandro Castellani (1824-83), antiquarian, dealer and member of the celebrated goldmithing family. He had his own family collection of ancient Roman glass which was a source of inspiration for the Compagnia Venezia-Murano. The Murano revival had originally made copies of historic Venetian glass from the fifteenth century onwards. In 1878 under Castellani the company started making copies of ancient Roman and Early Christian glass. By studying old treatises they discovered the ancient method of making gold-glass enabling far greater accuracy than in previous reproductions. Both companies showed in 1881 at the Milan Exposition of Italian indusrtrial art. The Comnpnay merged with Pauly & C in 1919. In 1971, the House of Salviati collaborated with the Laurel Lamp Company to produce original Murano art glass sculptures employed in table lamps which were featured at the Los Angeles Furnishings Mart. The company was later acquired in 1999 by the French glassmaker that would later be known as Arc International.
