Crafted in France circa 1880, the elegant Napoleon III vessels are executed in spelter with a beautifully aged verdigris patina accented by warm gilt highlights, and raised on stepped rouge marble bases with striking white veining.
Each amphora-form vase is adorned with flowing Art Nouveau-inspired handles and elaborate high-relief harvest scenes celebrating the abundance of the French countryside. One vessel depicts grape pickers framed by trailing vines and clusters of fruit, while the companion vase illustrates wheat harvesting beneath a radiant sun motif. At the base of each urn, finely sculpted young peasant women gather grapes and sheaves of wheat, lending the pair a strong narrative and sculptural presence from every angle.
The surfaces are enriched with scrolling foliage, grapevine garlands, wheat stalks, and pastoral medallions executed with exceptional depth and movement. Signed “Moreau” on the base, the pair exemplifies the romantic naturalism and decorative sophistication associated with the celebrated French sculptor.
