From an early age, Etienne Marie Lucien (also known as Le Rallic) (1891–1968) was passionate about drawing. As a minor, he moved to Paris to pursue his dreams and develop his skills in such recognized and respected magazines as Le Rire, Le Petit Illustre Amusant, etc. Gustave Blanchot (also known as Gus Bofa), a fellow young aspiring artist, helped Le Rallic discover his artist's name and create his signature. In 1912, he left his pencil and paper to enroll in the military, joining The Cavalry School in Saumur. It was there that he discovered his love of horses, an animal which would figure prominently in his post-war works (the earliest ones being drawings of horses for army publications). It is said that his admiration and respect for the noble beast translated into his drawings of them, which are often highly detailed, dynamic, colorful images.
This set of two horizontal pochoirs (a stencil technique) are in excellent condition. Unlined, they are beautifully colored action-packed scenes which would look beautiful framed.
