Noriko Takamiya puts a modern twist on traditional Japanese basketmaking methods through her experimentation with weaving techniques. For Takamiya, testing primary methods, including wrapping and tying and plaiting on various kinds of materials--wood splint, ramie, rice straw and paper – makes up her practice. The non-vessel forms that emerge reveal the interplay of structure and the materials' unique properties. Takamiya is a member of an influential group of innovative basketmakers who have held an annual basketry exhibition since 1986.
