By 20th century, most were replaced by galvanized steel buckets; finally by plastic. The hole near top was used to hang it on a nail and hollow metal tube, driven in a drilled hole in the tree, which was later removed, so as not to ruin the tree when sawn into logs. They were made by the local cooper or barrelmaker, or by a skilled farmer during the winter, and secured by the steel bands; This method was used unchanged since the 1600's, except iron bands were used until about 1870's's. By the 1960's those that survived had become very collectible. Virginia Wareham Dean, of Sherman, Westfield and Chautauqua New York was a Gold Leaf artist who usually painted antique furniture. This is the only sap bucket she restored and painted, in the 1960's. . This is a charming and patriotic t use of an 18th and 19th century painting technique. Similar painting of American eagles were seen on many items dating back to the 1780's less
