A truly exceptional antique walnut serpentine commode, showcasing masterful craftsmanship and dramatic materials throughout. This grand-scale piece features richly bookmatched flamed walnut veneer on the serpentine drawer fronts, accented by original aged brass hardware with exquisite patina.
The commode is adorned with classic egg-and-dart edge molding, gracefully turned and carved legs, and ebonized fluted columns that frame the piece with architectural elegance. A beautifully figured marble top in warm neutral tones adds further sophistication and completes this commanding design.
The side panels feature stunning, highly figured veneer—an absolute standout detail that elevates the piece from beautiful to breathtaking.
While the design is clearly French-inspired, we believe this chest to be American-made, likely from the late 1800s to early 1900s. Sourced from a distinguished Riverside, California estate, not far from the historic Mission Inn, this is a rare and possibly one-of-a-kind find—we’ve not come across another quite like it in our travels or research.
