What a find! This fabulous pair (mid to late 18th C) is most likely of Asian descent, but taken out of context could also appear as early American/New Hope primitives.
The polychrome lacquer includes red and yellow tones on the faces and bodies. There are black and brown mane/hair details and excellent facial carving. Note the whisker details and the fantastic curved tails!
There is evidence of wear due to age—there are seams along the sides of the body and some evidence of flaking/peeling. Nothing atypical, most of their existence likely in an open air home.
Totally unique, fantastic addition to any collection.
From a prominent London estate.
