Original membership promotional poster from the Pasadena Art Museum. The poster features an image by Wasily Kandinsky and cites admission to his retrospective exhibition as a benefit of membership. This allows us to date the poster to 1963 - 1964. Measures 13 x 22 inches. The colors are brick red and mustard yellow, with white accents. Excellent condition. Poster was stored flat (never rolled) and has little handling wear. See photos and condition report for full details.
The Pasadena Art Museum played a seminal role in the development of contemporary art in Southern California during the 1960s. It was relatively short-lived, from 1953 - 1975.
The exhibition referenced on the poster is "Wasily Kandinsky: A Retrospective Exhibition," organized by the Guggenheim Museum in 1963. After leaving New York, it traveled to the Pasadena Art Museum, and continued to several other venues including the San Francisco Museum of Art, Portland Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Worcester Art Museum.
The last photo is from a Wall Street Journal article and shows Andy Warhol, Billy Al Bengston, and Dennis Hopper at the opening of Marcel Duchamp's 1963 retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum. Duchamp played chess with a nude Eve Babitz the next day. Photo by Julian Wassar.
Poster will ship flat.

Poster is clean; possibly un-used but I cannot confirm. I believe it has been stored flat (never rolled). Nominal handling wear is best seen in photos of the backside. Some curling / folding at corners but no hard creases. Handling marks are not visible from the front. I believe the poster will have a "mint" appearance when framed. Poster will ship flat. less
