Visionary Paul Laszlo designed this mid-century table lamp for Brown Saltman during the 1950s in the United States. It has a wood body adorned with Laszlo's chest pattern, reminiscent of his famed "Basket Weave" furniture line.
Geometry and volumes take centre stage with its rectangular structure for the foot and base and tube-shaped shade.
Paul Laszlo (1900-1993) was a Hungarian-born American interior designer known for his luxurious and influential work during the mid-20th century. He became a prominent figure in Hollywood's Golden Age, designing elegant interiors for celebrities, wealthy clients, and prominent institutions. Laszlo studied architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 1927, he moved to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, where he quickly established himself as a sought-after designer. His work embodied the glamour and sophistication of the era, combining modernist principles with opulent materials and impeccable craftsmanship.
Laszlo's clientele included Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, and Barbara Stanwyck. Laszlo's designs often featured custom furniture, vibrant colours, rich textures, and a harmonious blend of traditional and modern elements. Throughout his career, Laszlo worked on various projects ranging from private residences to hotels, clubs, and corporate spaces. His notable works include the interiors of the iconic Cocoanut Grove nightclub at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, as well as the renowned Brown Derby restaurant.
Paul Laszlo's influence extended beyond his immediate projects. He authored several books on interior design, including "New Interiors" and "Paul Laszlo: A Lifetime of Interior Design." His designs helped shape the aesthetic of mid-century modern interior design and continue to inspire contemporary designers today.
The shade's dimensions are 12'x12'. The lamp's height from the base to the socket is 19'. The base measures 8'5 by 8'5.
