Right Out of a Barn in The Bangor Maine Area - This Really is an Exceptionally Nice and Very Rare Authentic Antique Early 19th Century Country Primitive Dry Measure. VERY LARGE 8 GALLON SIZE! - The Front is Hot Iron Branded - Reads "IMPERIAL BUSHEL" This Would have Been Used to Measure Grains, Rice, Beans, Seeds, Fruits, Flour, Etc. These were Typically Used in Country Stores - Wholesalers & Retailers - Farms - Merchant Ships - Wagons Etc. It is Completely & Substantially Hand Made Out of Solid Oak "Staves" in The Classic Barrel Style. The Top Rim and the Base Are Fitted with Heavy Gauge Hand Wrought Iron Structural Bands. Note Also That The 2 Substantially Made Side Handles are Completely Hand Wrought with Complicated Hollow Construction - Obviously the Work of a Master Blacksmith. NOTE! - That the Center - Underside of the Bottom Panel is Also Hot Iron Branded with a Mark that I Could Not Decipher but I Am Quite Sure That it is a Registered Assayer and Possibly Makers Mark - See The Last - 12 Photograph. Original Origin Most Likely England. Condition Can Best be Seen in The Photographs. It is Been Used Extensively Over the Years and The Wood Surfaces are Quite Weathered Etc. Giving it a Wonderful Authentic Old Rustic Look and Patina that Cannot be Duplicated. There is Some Age and Use Related Wood Loss on The Base - Bottom Rim Perimeter. This Would Truly Make a Interesting and Unique Decorator Item. Possible Uses Could Include Hearth and Fireplace Firewood & Kindling Bucket - Planter - Christmas Tree Base Etc.
