Mark Rothko ( 1903 - 1970 ) is an American Modernist painter of Russian Jewish descent. Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally defined as an Abstract Expressionist. His bold use of color fields make the artworks impressively iconic and highly individual. Rothko is considered to be one of the most important and influential American painters of The 20th Century Art works by Rothko are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
Mark Rothko sought to communicate human emotion and the human drama through his work. An early proponent of Surrealism, Rothko's spiritual energy became more refined in his later work, moving toward the elimination of all obstacles between the painter and the idea, between the idea and the observer.
More than 70 images spanning the course of Rothko'd career are presented here in this beautiful volume, many with close-ups that reproduce details of the works at near-life size, allowing the viewer to enter the intimate world of Mark Rothko. Incisive compelling essays offer further insights into the challenging and mysterious world of this American creative genius.
Titled chapters in this book include the following : Introduction by Arnold Glimcher, The Surrealist Years 1944-1946 by Robert Rosenblum, The Multiforms 1947-1948 by Mark Stevens, The Murals 1958-1959 by Arnold Glimcher, The Sectionals 1949-1969 by Irving Sandler, and The Dark Paintings 1969-1970 by Brian O'Doherty.
