This framed woodblock print captures a Kabuki actor in an elaborate patterned robe, rendered in the distinctive style of Japanese ukiyo-e portraiture. The figure is depicted in a graceful pose against a minimalist background of bare branches and water, with careful attention to the decorative textile details of the costume and the actor's refined facial features.
The work dates to the Edo or early Meiji period, when Kabuki theater was at the height of its cultural prominence in Japan. Toyokuni II was known for his actor portraits that conveyed both the drama of the stage and the individual character of the performer, continuing the tradition of the Utagawa school's celebrated woodblock designs.
