Created between 1930 and 1939, the series consists of 105 individual etchings, each capturing moments from well-known biblical narratives and characters. Chagall's distinct artistic style, characterized by vibrant colors, dreamlike imagery, and a blend of symbolism and personal interpretation, is evident throughout the series.
The subjects of the etchings range from stories like Adam and Eve, Noah's Ark, Abraham and Isaac, Jacob's ladder, Joseph and his brothers, Moses receiving the Ten Commandments, and more. Chagall's unique approach to the biblical stories often involves a playful and surreal depiction of the characters and events. He incorporates elements from his own Jewish heritage and Russian upbringing, resulting in a fusion of cultural influences within the biblical narratives.
Ambroise Vollard, a prominent French art dealer and publisher, commissioned Chagall to create the Bible Series. Vollard was known for collaborating with various artists to produce illustrated books and print portfolios. Tragically, Vollard was killed in an automobile accident in the summer of 1939. Chagall's Bible Series was intended to be published as a limited-edition portfolio of etchings, capturing the artist's interpretations of the Bible's stories.
