An antique Indian embroidered silk textile panel, dating from the late 19th century, featuring repeating stylized peacocks and leaf like boteh – or paisley - motifs within an elaborate embroidered border in shades of aubergine, crimson, cream, and shades of blue.
The composition is strikingly graphic, with alternating peacocks and stylized leaf forms enclosing small blossoms arranged in a rhythmic grid across a warm champagne-toned silk ground. The wide embroidered border incorporates scrolling vines, floral roundels, and delicate repeating motifs that give the piece exceptional visual movement and decorative appeal.
Likely originating from western India, possibly Gujarat or Rajasthan, the textile was probably created for ceremonial use. The finely worked embroidery and luminous silk ground suggest it was intended as a special textile with both ornamental and symbolic significance.
The peacock motifs — long associated in Indian decorative arts with beauty, prosperity, and protection — give the textile a strong visual identity while reinforcing its ceremonial character. The balance between the highly stylized birds and the paisley forms creates a composition that feels both graphic and organic.
The textile is now beautifully presented under a clear acrylic frame against a neutral linen backing, allowing the embroidery, texture, and age-related character of the silk to remain fully visible. The presentation gives the piece a strong architectural presence while preserving the softness and movement of the textile itself.
A distinctive example of antique Indian textile art that works equally well in traditional, eclectic, and modern interiors.
