Elevate your collection with this exquisite piece of German precision engineering and Belle Époque craftsmanship. This wall-mounted weather station features a highly accurate aneroid barometer paired with a dual-scale thermometer (Celsius and Réaumur), all encased in a magnificent, hand-carved dark wood frame (likely walnut).
Historical Significance
The mechanism bears the prestigious "G.L." (Gebrüder Lufft) monogram within a compass—the hallmark of Stuttgart’s premier meteorological instrument maker. This specific piece was likely retailed or assembled by G. Frei, whose name is delicately inscribed on the dial. The presence of the Réaumur scale (marked "R") confirms its authentic turn-of-the-century provenance.
Design & Details
Aesthetic: Elaborate "Historicism" style carving with scrolling acanthus leaves and a pierced gallery.
Open-Escapement Dial: The 8 cm dial features a rare open center, allowing a fascinating view of the internal brass bellows and precision chain mechanism.
Typography: Classic Gothic-style German lettering: Stürmisch, Regen, Veränderlich, Schön, S. Trocken.
Condition
In excellent vintage condition. The wood retains a deep, rich patina with minimal signs of wear consistent with age. The glass is clear, and the barometer mechanism remains responsive to pressure changes. A true "conversation piece" for a library, study, or classic entryway.
