A French Revolution tin-glazed earthenware dish, made in Nevers, circa 1790.
Showing a plump figure along side a basket of flowers beneath de l’arbre de la Liberté. The full body of the figure symbolizes the end of the famine and the hope of the people. A hand painted floral border on the scalloped rim.
Called faïence parlante or faïence patriotique, dishes and bowls painted with images or mottos of the French Revolution (1789-99) reflected the political allegiances of those who displayed these pieces in their homes.
8.75″ Diameter
Incredible antique condition, the expected surface wear, the usual fritting to the rim. The rim has some white over-painting.
