With it's generous width and slight concave curve, this bench is exemplary of the fine elegance seen in Paoli's best works. Original makers mark completely intact and attached to the underside, "Emilio Paoli Firenze Via Vigna Nuova, 8". After Paoli opened a broom workshop in 1895, a few years later he began producing rattan furniture, baskets, bags, straw hats and decorative raffia panels. At the second Florence Craft Fair in 1932, Paoli's company began collaborations with Dal Vera factory in Conegliano Veneto, Italy. This was a company that imported plant based materials from the orient. As such, Paoli continued his previous work in the production of a great lineage of fine furniture crafted from materials such as rattan, cane, bamboo, raffia etc. Some of his well known designs included a folding cane and pith armchair, with cushions upholstered in raffia fabric, chaise-longue chairs, small tables and benches, at that time defined as "beach furniture". The same holds true for today's concept of coastal decor, which is greatly comprised of the same plant-based materials such as wicker, rattan, raffia, bamboo etc. Given the age of this awe-inspiring bench, the overall condition is outstanding.
