Salvador Dalí, renowned Spanish surrealist artist, created a series of etchings titled "Les Amours de Cassandre" (The Loves of Cassandre) in the 1960s. "Nue" (Nude) showcases Dalí's signature style and surrealistic imagery.
"Nue" features a female nude figure in a dreamlike setting. Dalí often explored themes of sexuality and desire in his works, and this etching is no exception. The figure in "Nue" is depicted in a reclining position, with elongated limbs and exaggerated curves, which are typical of Dalí's artistic style. The composition of the etching creates a sense of ambiguity and mystery, inviting viewers to interpret the symbolic elements within the artwork.
Pierre de Ronsard wrote a collection of poems in 1552 to express his love for Cassandre Salviate, daughter of an Italian banker. They met in 1554 at a court ball in Blois ,France when she was fifteen and he was twenty-one, but alas she married another man the following year. This series became a classic in French literature.
Pierre de Ronsard ( 1524 – 1585 ) was chief among the French Renaissance group of poets known as La Pleiade and he himself became known as the “prince of poets”.
Dalí's etchings are characterized by intricate and delicate linework, achieved through the technique of etching on copper plates. This process involves coating a copper plate with a layer of wax, then incising the desired image into the wax using a sharp tool. The plate is then submerged in an acid bath, which etches the exposed areas of the plate. Afterward, the plate is inked and pressed onto paper, transferring the etched image. This meticulous process allows for fine details and intricate textures in the final print.
As an artist, Dalí was known for his ability to merge reality with the subconscious, resulting in bizarre and fantastical scenes. His works often incorporated elements such as melting clocks, distorted figures, and unexpected juxtapositions of objects.
It is worth noting that Salvador Dalí's artworks, including his etchings, are highly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts worldwide. His contributions to the surrealist movement and his unique artistic vision continue to have a profound impact on the art world.
The Dali Les Amours de Cassandre book was issued in 1968. The 16th century poet Pierre Ronsard wrote the poem. As illustrated by Dali, there are 10 full page separate etchings.
