Antique English Porcelain Warming Bowl
In the manner of John Ridgway
Rare
Has original cork & porcelain stopper
This Highly Decorative Warming Bowl is unique in that it has a porcelain, decorated under bowl and elaborate spout & stopper.
Many surviving warming bowls are metal bottomed with simple side spouts.
Luckily this lovely serve ware has survived intact and in excellent condition.
Original stoppers, including the cork, are seldom found intact.
Similar to a chafing dish, these bowls were used to keep items placed on top of them warm. Even the grandest English homes in the 1800’s tended to be chilly, so keeping food & serve wear warm during mealtime was important.
Very Hot water was poured into the spout, then the stopper was inserted to keep hot water safely inside the bowl.
Originally there was a delicate chain that attached to the stopper to a small loop on the underside of the bowl. See photo 7.
You can replace the chain, or use a bit of ribbon.
The imprint “ Oude” is on the bottom & painted under the glaze is hand painted “3-6526-P
The Bowl is in the Style of John Ridgway
The transfer print is embellished with hand painted gold detailing.
The Double Lion Gold Latin Crest reads:
Floreat Laurus
which translates:
Let Flourish Success
