An extensive panoramic view depicting a major historical military episode
Named "The Siege of Sebastopol 1855", it is made by Thomas S. Sinclair,(Scottish-American, ca.1805-1881), one of the premier Philadelphia lithographers of the 19th century, particularly in the field of chromolithography. Trained in lithography in Edinburgh, Sinclair immigrated to the United States ca. 1830 and worked in New York and Philadelphia. He produced all genres of lithographs including maps, advertisements, city and landscape views.
The Siege of Sevastopol, (Oct. 17, 1854 – Sept. 11, 1855), was a major operation of the Crimean War, in which 50,000 British and French troops (joined by 10,000 troops from Sardinia-Piedmont during 1855) besieged and finally captured the main naval base of the Russian Tsar Nicolas I Black Sea Fleet, which threatened the Mediterranean. The siege was the culminating struggle for the strategic Russian port in 1854-55 and was the final episode of the Crimean War.
The litho was published by the American book publisher Henry Bill (1824-1891).
The scene is presented with a view from the East. The allied troops appear on the foreground along the siege constructions. There is fire visible at the defense walls build by the Russians. The naval fleets are at the background in the bay. There is an index with 31 locations numbered at the scene.
The lithograph comes well presented in black and gilt wooden frame and off white matting, under glass, ready for display.
