This piece is most likely Chinese. The container is made of inlaid burl wood with green decoration in a floral and strip pattern and sits on brass feet formed as carp. There is also a decorative brass band around the bottom center opening with a key lock.
The case most likely dates to the 19th Century. It is in good condition with a few missing pieces of inlay. Does not nor ever did come with the compass.
