This ink on silk handpainted fukusa represents Hotei by Kano Yukinobu. The Kano school is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting. In Edo period painting, Budai (hotei) is frequently pictured together with groups of playing children (karako). Verso (back) is a mon of Matsunaga. Matsunaga Hisahide was a daimyo of Japan following the Sengoku period of the 16th century.
Commissioned in Japan, 1940s or 50s (early Shōwa period). Item is authentic and all handmade. Silk plain weave; lining of silk plain weave with hand-painted ink and brushwork (sumi-e).
This rare, historic Laughing Buddha ( Hotei in Japan) may be displayed as wall art.
Measurements: 20 inches x 19 inches (51 cm x 48.5 cm).
Condition: Excellent. Sold "as found". Provenance: Fukuoka city/Japan.
