I picked up this hojalata beauty at an import boutique-type store that was located in Brookside, in Kansas City, in 2006. Did you know that Mexican hojalata (tin work) dates back to the 16th century colonial period? Many credit San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato as the birthplace of hojalata. As the story goes, Aucensio Llamas moved to San Miguel de Allende from Jerez Zacatecas in 1910. For 25 years he made utilitarian items from tin such as milk cans, oil lamps and colanders, for making atole. It was in the late 1930s to early 1940s that San Miguel de Allende’s hojalata evolved from humble utilitarian wares to decorative artisanal pieces. The artisans use heavy gauge tin which is hand cut, shaped and pounded then stamped and/or punched to form many intricate and elaborate functional works of art. This beauty’s frame, hung vertically measures 27¼” x 21” x 1½” H/W/D; hung horizontally 27¼” x 21” x 1½” W/H/D. The rectangular center mirror is framed by a scalloped border all around which features inset hand painted petite Talavera tiles with a floral motif featuring primary colors of yellow and assorted blue hues on a white background. The mirror alone measures, if hung vertically, 16¼” x 10” H/W; hung horizontally 16¼” x 10” W/H. Approximate weight 15 lbs. Handcrafted from heavy gauge tin with a motif that is a mixture of scallops and punched floral medallions; circular openings on the backside allow you to hang the mirror vertically or horizontally. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear that includes some areas of oxidation (see photos 8 & 10) which in no way affects its beauty or utility. There is one surface, fine line scratch which is so indiscernible I could not capture it in a photo. This beauty needs a fabulous new home, yours perhaps?
