Early Meiji period (c. 1870s) with large and thin strips of sooted (susutake) bamboo plaiting. Deep rich reddish brown hue on the bamboo strips. Sits upon a sooted and gnarled wisteria branch. The gourd shape resembles a hornet’s nest. The bottom gourd has an opening with a copper insert sleeve. In very good condition with wear consistent with age.
