Large porcelain insets in oval form, finely carved in relief with flowers representing four seasons, spring peach blossoms, summer peonies, fall chrysanthemums and winter's prunus blossoms. Hand painted in mineral colors of fuchsia, yellow and green pastels. Solid brass base and frameworks. This pair of republic era bookends juxtaposes boldness and delicacy, with simple, strong structure framing graceful, delicate, two dimensional depictions. "Four Seasons", an auspicious theme in the late Qing dynasty early republic era, is believed to symbolize good fortune and longevity. See less
