What is the Difference Between a Chest of Drawers and a Dresser?
While both dressers and chest of drawers are case pieces designed to provide bedroom storage, dressers are typically low and wide and chest of drawers are tall and narrow. You may also see chest of drawers labeled as “high boy dressers.”
Dressers and chest of drawers are both used to stow clothing. Chest of drawers usually come equipped with smaller drawers than dressers, making them best for storing smaller, foldable items like socks and tee-shirts than bulky winter sweaters and jeans. Dressers generally clock in between 26” and 44” hight, meaning that their top can be used both as a decorative and functional surface area. Chest of drawers have a higher top, so more often they are employed for the sole purpose of function and the desire to conserve floor space. Both dressers and chest of drawers are usually constructed of wood, but it is more common to find dressers finished in materials other than wood, such as lacquer, raffia, and acrylic, than chest of drawers.
