What is a French door?

French doors, also known as porte-fenêtre, or “window doors,” are doors inset with gridded windows. French doors, which came into vogue in 17th century France, were originally used as oversized windows. They are beloved for their ability to imbue any space with architectural integrity, plus the ample amount of natural light they let in. French doors are generally used in pairs, but they can be used solo or in sets of four or even six. They are most often used in bedrooms and living rooms to access an outdoor space such as a patio, balcony, pool deck, or garden veranda. French doors are often constructed of wood or metal, and they are considered to be timeless investments that will add lasting value to a home. French doors can be paired with any style of interiors, but they pair especially well with traditional or contemporary styles.
