Barrel chairs are accent chairs with a semicircular back. In accordance with its name, the chair mimics the cross-section of a barrel. The back wraps around the sides into the armrests of the chair, forming a crescent-like shape. Also called a tub chair or a drum chair, the barrel chair often has a matching half circle seat with a straight edge. However, considering that the curved back is really the focal point of the furnishing, rounded, arched, and more undulating seat shapes are also common. No matter the exact silhouette, the chair’s roundness makes sitting in one feel almost like an all-encompassing hug.

Some barrel chairs have four legs on each corner of the bottom, while others have a single pedestal base. A relatively new invention, swiveling bottoms have also become increasingly popular. The chair’s gracefully rounded back makes it impressive from every angle—an element further emphasized by a swivel foundation.

Barrel accent chairs especially befit low-light lounges, evoking images of an atmospheric jazz club. They also look at home in central placements like conversation pits or in an empty corner of a living room. While traditional barrel chairs have fully embracing sides, most barrel dining chairs have scrapped the enveloping sides and gone for a more streamlined look. In order to fit comfortably under a table, barrel dining chairs usually include the barrel back and thin, steel armrests.

Due to the barrel chair’s versatility, furniture makers have continually returned to its silhouette over the years. Its iconic profile allows designers to easily integrate fresh upholstery, tufting, and other embellishments.
