We’re back with a new guest tastemaker for some quick-fire questions and a mini-curation of some fab Chairish finds!

This week, we are joined by Washington D.C.-based designer Paul Corrie. Twenty years ago, after graduating from law school, Paul was tasked with being his parents’ communicator with the interior designer they’d hired to redecorate their home. When the designer sensed a natural eagerness and savvy in Paul, they encouraged him to pursue his newfound interest and make the switch from law to interior design. And the rest is history. Paul has since taken a lot of design inspiration from classic homes of the capital city, masterfully incorporating modern design into traditional spaces and merging varying periods and styles to create a layered feel.

Read on to find out his number one tip for merging contemporary with classic, and which fashion designer he considers his ultimate style icon.

How would you describe a quintessential classic Washington, DC home?
A quintessential Washington, DC home is classic in nature and detail, rich in history, and architecturally traditional.

What is the key to incorporating contemporary elements into a classic space, while maintaining its character?
The key to incorporating contemporary elements into a classic space is making sure varying elements marry well together and don’t compete or distract the eye. A relationship must exist, whether it be in the lines, complementary colors, or a play or juxtaposition on texture.

What’s helping you get through quarantine? What are you excited to do once it ends?
An abundance of work is getting me through quarantine. I’m most excited to return to spending time with family and friends and not having to wear a mask or social distance.

What is the most outstanding design element you’ve ever incorporated into a space?
One of the most outstanding, and unusual design elements I’m currently undertaking is converting a shower into a 1/2 Bath “Urinal Room” in Provincetown, MA.

Who is your ultimate style icon?
My ultimate style icon would be Tom Ford. He’s always so cool, calm, and collected, and his timeless and tasteful sense of fashion and presentation never disappoints.
