After founding his own design firm ECHE, Eche Martinez looked to Chairish to fulfill a long dream of his—to own a pair of Knoll baby chairs designed by Italian-American artist Harry Bertoia. Now in the window display of his firm, the chairs have become a sort of icon for Eche’s business and aesthetic of luxury and timelessness. Timeless with a little bit of something unexpected.
How did you find the item you bought on Chairish, and what made you choose it? Did you have a specific search or were you just browsing?
I was super specific in my search. I always had an eye out for these chairs and used the opening of my own firm to purchase them as a little treat to myself for all the hard work.
Did you know where you’d put this piece in your home when you bought it, or did you figure you’d find the right spot?
When opening up my firm, I was determined to find a pair of baby Bertoia chairs for the window displays. Everyone loved them and they sort of became a little icon of ours.
Why do you love shopping vintage? And how does sustainability factor into your choices of new products vs. vintage finds?
Vintage adds a layer of depth and interest that’s hard—or almost impossible—to achieve with all new merchandise.
Are there any dream vintage or antique pieces you wish you could have?
I’d love to own anything original from John Dickinson’s or David Hicks’ collections… one day!
