I paint to tell stories. In my Wildflowers series, I explore the tension of being a female surgeon where emotions were downplayed. In these paintings of unconventional flowers, I deconstruct the floral elements, add structure and drama, and use lots of powerful pink. My current body of work begins with broad washes of transparent paint and inks. I then draw into the color fields with loose sketches using graphite, pastels, and charcoal. Layers of paint are added, becoming progressively textured towards impasto. I love the interplay between the veiled and the opaque, symbolic of what we choose to show to others versus what we hide.
