Designed by Raija Uosikkinen (1923-2004) for Arabia of Finland, "Sotka" is one of the more popular and sought after mid 20th Century patterns as it was only in production between 1968 to 1974.
Like the "Emilia", "Valencia" and "Pomono" patterns it features the signature blue broad brush strokes of several of Arabia's collections embellishing the dinnerware. The "Sotka" (a Bluebill bird) pattern depicts an abstract feather decoration in a calligraphic-like brush stroke, and because each was hand painted by Arabia's team of in-house artisans the pieces are distinctly unique and there are discernible variations in the tone - from pale watercolor, to cobalt, to deep ink blue.
Offered is a set of four soup bowls that are shallow and have a rim that measure 8 1/8" in diameter and 1 3/8" in height.
Two are marked "12", and the other two, "18", from different production lines, and they are all marked "ARABIA -Wärtsilä, (sic: Helsinki) FINLAND - "SOTKA" (the name of the pattern) - HANDPAINTED - KESTA KONEPESUN TAL MASKINDISK (machine washable / dishwasher-proof).

One of the bowls is chipped on the underside of its rim, and is slightly visible as a fleabite when turned right side up. The other bowl has a visible hairline fracture on the underside that is not exposed when facing up, however, the chip is certainly visible (see photos) and reveals the earthenware clay below the glaze. When facing up, all four bowls appear fine for their age, yet these are from a dinnerware that was used and enjoyed for several decades. Two of the bowls are intact and in normal and used condition. The visible unglazed spots are how the dinnerware pieces are made when suspended to dry. The wear is commensurate with their age and intended purpose. less
