This marvelous antique German tapered urn shaped sugar bowl was created in gorgeous 800 silver and made by Koch & Bergfeld of Bremen, Germany prior to 1880 and most likely 1856. The style is Reichenau which focused on simplified and patterned shapes to create strongly expressive items. This beautiful sugar bowl has a surface that is lightly acid etched and the widest part is embossed with a lovely floral and vine design, against a stippled background. There are C shaped handles which are also embossed with a floral pattern. The base of the sugar bowl has embossed beads surrounded by arches. The inside is lightly gilted. Hallmarks are: 5857, a compote which represents Koch & Bergfeld, 800=silver, K." Measurements for this fabulous creation are: Height from top to bottom including handles=4-1/4 inches, Width at opening, side to side=4-1/4 inches, Width at widest above base including handles=7 inches, Weight= 8.15 Troy ounces. This beautiful sugar bowl has been well cared for, gently used and is in excellent antique condition without repairs. The inside surface has scratching, most likely caused by use of a spoon. The outside is free from dents or repairs. Light scratching is evident under magnification. This fabulous silver sugar bowl is the perfect addition to your dining service, particularly if you like pre-Art Nouveau design!
