Very rare porcelain figurine after the dancer lena amsel: dancer in an exotic pierrot costume with a zigzag pattern, with large flounced cuffs and matching high collar, posing in marching step with one leg raised and playing a lute with a long bridge, a drum as support next to the standing leg. Based on a white, fluted oval base with gold rim, artist's signature 'c.holzer-defanti.' on the top. In a photo from atelier eberth, berlin, the artist lena amsel can be seen in the costume shown in the design, which was created by the artist gertrud brandt. Lena amsel (1898-1929) was a polish-french dancer and actress. She came from jewish manufacturer circles. In 1914 she moved to dresden, in 1915 to berlin. She sought contact with the greats of vaudeville, film and theatre. In 1916 she met karl gustav vollmöller and max reinhardt in the café des westens. Vollmöller became her lover and supporter for several years. In 1927 lena amsel moved to paris and was best known for her extravagant private life. She died at the age of 31 near paris as a result of a car accident during an impromptu race. Gertrud brandt (1892-1964) was a master tailor, fashion designer and director of studies. From 1909 to 1915 she did an apprenticeship as a seamstress, which she completed with a master's degree. 1912-15 brandt studied at the school of applied arts in weimar. She then worked in the fashion department of the wiener werkstätte (ww), where she took over the management of the ww branch in zurich from dagobert peche in 1918 - until it closed in 1920. Gertrud brandt was married to the painter and artisan walter kornhas (1887-1940 ), with whom she ran the kornhas-brandt workshops in constance (designing gravestones and weaving). From 1930 she was involved in setting up the master school for fashion in munich, which she headed from 1951-57. Gertrud brandt created fashion and theater costumes for the ww, such as the paper clothes for the dancer lena amsel, who performed in vienna in 1917/18. The material paper, which emerged in the context of the war-related shortage of material for clothing, was used artistically in such a way that crepe was sewn onto a textile background to give the dancer an adequate brandt was probably the main designer of the fall collections of 1918 and 1919. Designed by constantin holzer-defanti (1881 - 1951) austrian sculptor and porcelain maker; lived in selb from 1918 to 1927, where he worked for the rosenthal and hutschenreuther factories and, for a short time, for the fraureuth porcelain factory. Similar to paul scheurich, holzer-defanti also took up suggestions from contemporary dance theater - apprenticeship in trento, master student in munich with rümann. 1918-1927 worked for rosenthal, 1927-1944 freelance artist in munich, 1944-1951 taught at the kunstgewerbeschule linz.
