Goldfish represent harmony, an auspicious representation of wealth and abundance. The Chinese pronunciation of fish (鱼）is similar to that of abundance（余)，a Chinese couplet fondly used in festive greetings to wish someone continuous and abundant wealth（连年有余）.

According to Chinese mythology, the revered fish is born with a sole purpose: to cross the Heavenly Gates where it will then transform into a Dragon. To fulfill this destiny, Carps are believed to be able to swim upstream against strong currents to reach this Golden paradise. The entire journey is a metaphor for one's advancement and achievement in life.
Today, the Carp remains a powerful symbol of the pursuit of excellence and high ambition. The Carp also signifies harmony, love and mutual growth; a pair of carp in water is often given as a wedding gift.
