Signed lower right, 'Bertalan' for Albert Bertalan (Hungarian, 1899-1956) and dated 1929.
Displayed in a period, birds-eye maple frame; frame size: 26 x 30 inches
An elegant, oil still-life by this early European modernist who exhibited widely and with success in Paris, including at the Salon des Indépendants (1926, 1930), the Salon d’Automne (1926) and the Salon des Tuileries (1930) among others.
Born in Hungary, Albert Bertalan first studied at the Free Art School of Károly Kernstok. In 1924, he moved to Paris to attend the Académie Julian and, in 1925, was granted his first solo exhibition at Galerie Bernheim-Jeune. That same year, Bertalan traveled to the Romanian artists' colony of Baia Mare, where he painted outdoors with artist Béla Iványi-Grünwald and István Réti. In 1928, he joined the Association New Artists and was granted a solo show in Nuremberg while continuing to exhibit regularly at the Société de Budapest. We are pleased to offer an elegant example of Bertalan's work painted during the artist's Paris period.
